That single sentence contains most of what separates accounts that survive from accounts that do not. Almost every trader has a process for deciding direction. Far fewer have a process for deciding size, and size is the variable that determines whether being wrong is a cost of doing business or the end of the account. This guide covers the risk-per-trade convention, how to derive position size from a stop rather than from available margin, and where the stop itself belongs.

The Problem: Direction Gets All the Attention

The marketing framing is straightforward: higher leverage, bigger returns from the same capital. Nothing about that is false.

That asymmetry is the problem. Direction is a forecast, and forecasts are wrong regularly even when the process is sound. Size is not a forecast. Once position size is derived from risk and stop distance, the selected multiple only determines how much margin is committed to hold that size.
