The risk framework is the valuable part, and it is why F&O traders tend to pick up perpetual futures faster than almost anyone else. The calendar habits are the dangerous part, because they feel like skill and behave like reflexes. It is that a large part of what feels like edge in Indian index derivatives is actually structure, not skill. Expiry-day behaviour, opening gap patterns, and fixed lot arithmetic are all consequences of how the NSE contract calendar is built. Read the pattern correctly and it looks like insight. Move to an instrument built on a different calendar, or on no calendar at all, and the same reading produces nothing, or worse, produces confident trades with no underlying logic.

This cohort has already lived through one version of this. Traders whose entire routine was built around weekly expiry days found that the structure their edge depended on had simply been removed. Moving to a perpetual contract is a larger version of that same lesson: the edge that survives a change in structure was real, and the edge that disappears with it was structured all along.

Five Things to Unlearn

         1. All of it depends on the market being closed. In a market that trades 24 hours a day, price adjusts as news arrives rather than all at once at 9:15 AM, so gaps do not form. The upside is that no stop-loss is ever leapfrogged by a weekend of accumulated news.
